The church's famous facade
St. Peter's Church (Dutch: Sint-Pieterskerk) is an old church located in the Grafstad quarter of Koningstad, Brunant. It was built as a cathedral from 1556-1560 and is the oldest church building in the capital. This church has been the site of many royal weddings and was the location of King Ambroos I's wedding to Caroline of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld and the site of his coronation in 1800. Many other royals have married here as well.
The bishop of the church is Adam Berger, in that position since 2012.
History
Work on St. Peter's began around 1556, based on a design by Italian architect Francesco Antonelli. Antonelli designed the church in a clearly Italian Renaissance style, taking inspiration from various churches in Rome.
St. Peter's Church was a cathedral until construction of St. Sebastian's Cathedral finished in 1798.
Visiting the church
St. Peter's church in located in Cathedral Plaza in Koningstad's Grafstad district. The church is open to visitors on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 10:00-16:00, and the entry fee is 2 euros, which is used to upkeep of the church.
