Alexanderberg

The Sint-Willemstad Funicular is a funicular railway in Sint-Willemstad, leading up to Alexander Hill near the city. The funicular was constructed from 1920 to 1926 and was a popular way for sightseers to climb the hill and see the town and sea below.

The city still operates the original trains from the 1920s, which were restored in the 1980s. Sightseers at the top are able to enjoy views of the city, the Mediterranean Sea and the Central Ranges. There is also restaurant located in the remains of a former monastery, which was re-purposed in the 1950s.

Infrastructure[]

The funicular's route is 1,323 meters long, and climbs from the base station (elevation 27m) to the Alexanderberg station (elevation 560m) in approximately 9 minutes. The gradient is on average 2.48/1, but the maximum is 2.2/1.
