Sint-Willemstad circa 1600

Sint-Willemstad is a major town and the capital of Sint-Willemstad Parish (south Central Island). The municipality also contains some neighborhoods near like Oudekastel.

Sint-Willemstad is located at the edge of the Central Ranges, overlooked by the Alexanderberg hill.

HistoryEdit

Sint-Willemstad was founded in 1510 by a group of 54 people. flourished in the 16th and 17th century, when the weaving establishments were very important. During the Brunanter Civil War, Sint-Willemstad supported old King Willem II; when he was defeated the town suffered reprisals, such as the burning of their textile factories. These took a long time to be rebuilt, and by then they were not able to compete well in Europe.

2012 Occupy protestsEdit

After similar protests in the United States and Lovia, Mardie Youvil began organizing Occupy Brunant with the protests beginning in Sint-Willemstad. Her main complaints were about how much debt Brunant had after joining the European Union, and using the Euro (instead of the Thaler) and the higher unemployment in the country's south. While it has support from the unemployed, the government and many citizens are criticizing the movement, due to the fact that they completely ignore the fact that Brunant has a solid welfare system. Nevertheless they plan to reform it to become more efficient and helpful. While these protests eventually petered out, a number of its organizers began joining together to create the Een Toekomst Samen coalition, which will be represented in the 2015 Municipal Elections in Sint-Willemstad.

GovernmentEdit

Sint-Willemstad has traditionally been a conservative region and has long voted in right-wing parties. They have had Christian Democratic Union mayors since 1996 and have not had a leftist mayor since that time. In recent years, with Occupy protests and grassroots movement, leftism has seen a small surge. Elections were held on 30 November 2015, seeing the left and center take a majority of seats.
