Sint-Anders was founded in 1398 by Venetian settlers as Carona and was formally given city rights in 1405, thus the rare use of a crown on the coat of arms since then. There were about 100 villagers here by 1408, when 35 Dutch settlers built a community on an nearby hill. By 1500 both communities had converged and were virtually indisinguishable. In 1910 it was decided to officially unite the two villages to form Sint Anders-Carona. Nowadays, the old town center is known as Carona and the higher area as Sint-Anders.

CultureEdit

The culture of old Carona has been very influential over that of Hogeberg Island. The famous Parade of the Dead originated here and spread to the other parts of the island, becoming a popular tradition for over 500 years. Sint-Anders houses the second greatest Jewish community in Brunant (second to that of Grijzestad), mostly of Sephardic origin.

ArchitectureEdit

Old Carona is often referred to as "the painted city", since many of the old houses feature different colors. Especially in the upper town, you can find lots of houses painted in blue, red, yellow and other colors.

TourismEdit

Tourism in Sint-Anders is not as big as in other cities in Brunant, but it is still present. Many people come to Sint-Anders and use it as a base from which they visit the nearby wineries of the Chester Valley or Charles Town further north.

In the town itself there are a few historic monuments. The Sint-Anders Church, dating to the 16th century is considered to be one of the nicest churches in Brunant. Other important sites include the 15th-century town hall and the historic Old Market Hall.
