Freemasonry is a fraternal organisation with origins among the trade guilds of stonemasons in Great Britain, and dates back to at least the 16th century. It's three primary tenets in modern times are service to the community, moral uprightness and the development and maintenance of fraternal friendship. There are about 1,500 Freemasons in Brunant.
History[]
Freemasonry was first brought to Brunant in the early 18th century by Scottish Borderers who belonged to the Grand Lodge of Scotland. Thus, the vast majority of historical Freemasonry in Brunant revolves around Scottish Rite Freemasonry.
Early history[]
The first Grand Lodge established in Brunant was in the old town of Koningstad in 1675 by Scottish mercenaries hired by the Van Draaks, who eventually settled in Brunant permanently. More Freemasons in the form of Borderers arrived all throughout the 18th century, and were concentrated in botht Central and Carrington Parishes. Freemasons were noted for their nearly unanimous support of James Carrington and his associates during his brief reign, but faced heavy discrimination afterwards because of it.
Late 19th Century to World War II[]
Freemasons were prominent in politics during the late 19th century, primarily in the Liberal Party, but also in the White Party. However, due to their association with the Carringtons, they were unpopular among the Dutch community.
In 1923, they built the Scottish Rite Cathedral in Grafstad, Koningstad.
