Drenthe is the capital and (after Sint-Hendrikstad) the second largest town of Drenthe Parish. Named after the Drenthe region in the Netherlands, it was founded in 1773 by Brunanter and Scandinavian immigrants, although the area had been inhabited before then by farmers of Brunanter and Spanish origin.

History[]

In the 7th and 8th centuries, the area of Drenthe was known as Mariana, the site of a Byzantine fortress and town. Mariana was conqured by the Arabs in 817 during the Arab invasion, with the commander, Filippos, killed. Mariana disappears from contemporary Arab writings around 900, likely abandoned. Its ruins were discovered in the 1830s.

Modern Drenthe was founded by Dutch and Scandinavian immigrants, mostly Scanian, around 1773. It was historically called Danastrum.

Drenthe saw significant damage during World War II and recovery only picked up in the 1960s with a faltering local economy.

Government[]

The current government was elected in 2016.

Economy[]

Much of the local economy has been centered around agriculture, with cabinetmaking important though the 19th century. While largely driving the economy for several centuries, the postwar period saw a decline of the economy, a rise in unemployment and lower improvement in the quality of living over the rest of Brunant.

More recently, construction and manufacturing has began to take a hold in the city and region. Employment has increased in engineering projects, such as the Martiges Viaduct and companies like Atenis have opened factories and there are a few bproducing automobiles and furniture.
