The title was created in 1478 by King Leuvis Van Damme for his eldest son and heir, Prince Hubertus, three years after the formation of the Kingdom of Brunant.

The title is a personal and non-hereditary title afforded only to the heir. If the heir is a male, his wife may use the title "Duchess of Middleton", but if the heir is a female, her husband may use the title "Lord Middleton".
