The Battle of Koningstad was a major military operation undertaken by German troops to capture the Brunanter capital, Koningstad.
Background[]
On May 20 1941 Germany invaded Crete and a few hours later they did the same to Brunant.
The attack[]
Nazi soldiers with the 107th and 109th Infantry Divisios were marched towards Koningstad, to take the capital. At Koningstad, the Germans met serious resistance by 2000 members of the Royal Guard. Soon another 1400 soldiers from the surrounding countryside came to their aid. But, there were over 20,000 Germans and their overwhelming numbers could not be held back. They used various field artillery to remove defenders from their positions, which proved effective over the antiaircraft defenses as no planes were used in the attack. The King and the Royal family had already been evacuated by then and were safe, although President Darnant was not so lucky and was arrested by the Nazis trying to flee (he would remain in prison until March 1944 when freed by the UR). A lone German plan dropped several tons of bombs over the Industriestad and shortly after the Royal Guard surrendered.
Aftermath[]
Much of Koningstad was in ruins and fires broke out throughout the night. There was still heavy resistance to the German occupation and many died fighting until the 30th, though the number of dead is unknown.
